A minute and a half of finished footage from the eagerly anticipated series The Penguin has finally been released on Friday. Since The Batman in 2022, many have been expecting to see the title character and Colin Farrell on the small screen. Warner Bros. Discovery is aiming to start creating anticipation for this Gotham universe in light of the depressing news from last week that The Batman 2 is being delayed.
Throughout the whole teaser, Farrell delivers a great monologue fit for a gangster, while the violence and gunplay in Gotham City’s dark underground gradually increase. The show follows Oswald Cobblepot’s ascent to prominence in Gotham’s criminal underworld and his evolution into one of the city’s most recognizable villains. It takes place right after the events of The Batman.
It remains to be seen if the critical acclaim of Farrell’s most recent endeavor, The Banshees of Inisherin, brings some new customers to the DC product. Producer Lauren LeFranc of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will pen the series, which will be directed by Craig Zobel, known best for Mare of Easttown. Due to writer’s and actor’s strikes, production was put on hold in June 2023 and resumed the week following Thanksgiving.
HBO Max is slated to premiere The Penguin in the fall of 2024. There will be eight episodes in the series. Stay tuned for additional updates on The Penguin and The Batman 2 here at The Reel Insights.
