Dune: Part Two is beaten out by Kung Fu Panda 4 for the second weekend in a row. The fact that this is the case shocks many. Online feedback suggested that the Sci-Fi blockbuster may have performed better in weeks two and three, but Jack Black’s well-known animated fourth picture triumphed.
This weekend’s box office performance of new releases was lackluster. The American Society of Magical Negroes, an American comedy satire, and One Life, a WWII drama, only brought in $1.25 million and $1.7 million, respectively. As a result, they ranked ninth and eighth at the box office. With these inconspicuous March releases, though, we can’t help but anticipate this—February and March have become known as studio dump months.
Bob Marley: One Love comes in seventh place on the weekend after coasting reasonably well, earning $2.3 million in its fifth weekend. With a budget spend of $70 million, it is beginning to turn a profit after marketing, bringing in about $169 million globally. Love Lies Bleeding, an A24 film, ranked sixth on the weekend after earning $2.5 million in its second weekend of distribution.
As previously said, Kung Fu Panda 4 is the biggest earner this weekend, taking in an amazing $30M in its second weekend. Dune just trails in second place with $29.1M. Panda’s performance thus far has to be a source of satisfaction for Universal Pictures, given it is currently in the green. Given that the animated series has demonstrated to have strong fan support, it raises the possibility of a subsequent episode in the franchise.
Even though Dune: Part Two produced two second-place finishes, its predecessor is being destroyed. As of this past weekend, Part Two has surpassed Part One’s global total of $434 million, earning an astounding $495 million in just three weeks. It was previously reported that Part One’s domestic total had already been surpassed a week ago. The road to a billion dollars is a lengthy one, though, despite the fact that many optimistic estimates saw Part Two crossing that threshold. Warner Bros. Discovery is probably waiting for Part Two to make a profit, maybe this week or next weekend, before approving the third movie, even though director Denis Villeneuve has stated he is working on a third project.
